Employee in the Spotlight – Mike Hermsdorff
In an effort to stay at the top of our game, Teed & Brown team members and employees are encouraged to study Turfgrass Science at a far deeper level than you’d find at just about any other lawn care company. Our employees are not just working professionals, they are students too.
Today, we wanted to highlight one employee who is actively working his way towards a degree in Turfgrass Science from Penn State University.
Name: Maycoll (Mike) Hermsdorff
Teed & Brown Experience: 7 Years, started in 2012
Title: Team Leader
Lives in: Danbury, CT
Certifications: Certified Lawn Care Manager (NALP)
Current Class: Biol 127 (Introduction to Plant Biology)
Previous Coursework: Turf 230 (Turfgrass Pesticides), Turf 235 (The Turfgrass), Soils 101 (Introductory Soil Science), Turf 238 (Turf and Ornamental Weed Control)
Q: What courses have you found most interesting so far?
A: So far, Turf 235 and Turf 238. These are classes that teach the scientific concepts behind things that I see and deal with on a daily basis, and they gave me a better understanding of how to deal with things that I encounter on lawns.
Q: Has taking these classes given you a new perspective on your job?
A. Absolutely. Before taking some of these classes, there was a lot of stuff that I just didn’t know about, and wasn’t even aware of. Just this morning, I was reading about plant hormones and some of the herbicides that actually are hormones and act on the plant because of that. I knew the products could control weeds, but now I understand exactly how and why.
Q: What’s your long term plan academically?
A. Definitely a Bachelors Degree.
