Turf Type Tall Fescue is Coming!

We’re excited to announce that we’ve recently secured a large order of top-quality Turf Type Tall Fescue grass seed for the upcoming fall! You may have heard of this grass species before, but we wanted to take a minute to explain our excitement. This is good news for those of you who may be looking at brown areas of lawn right now.

The USA is broken down into 5 primary zones for Turfgrass. Depending on the zone where you live, different species of grass are ideal. The zones are:

  • Cool Humid
  • Transition
  • Warm Humid
  • Cool Arid
  • Warm Arid

We live in the “Cool Humid” zone but we are VERY close to the transition zone, so cool season grasses struggle here. The transition zone (just a bit south of us) is a very difficult place to be because it is too hot for cool season grasses but too cool for warm season grasses. It’s just bad for every grass, with the exception of Tall Fescue. Tall Fescue can handle more heat and drought while still surviving the winter.

Over the years, turfgrass breeders have created new varieties of Tall Fescue that are even more cool tolerant while retaining the strength through harsher summer conditions. Those new breeds are ideal for the CT region. And while this seed is more expensive than the other options, we’re excited to have purchased a large amount for use this fall on those lawns that have a tendency to suffer more during the summer heat.
